There is an important permissible standard about foreigner's remuneration when a foreigner applies for the status of worker of "Business Manager", "Medical Services", "Researcher", "Instructor", "Engineer/Specialist in Humanities/International Services", "Intra-Company Transferee", "Nursing Care", "Skilled Labor", "Specified Skilled Worker" or "Designated Activities (graduates of Japanese universities/colleges)".

The permissible standard states that an applicant must receive no less remuneration than would a Japanese national for comparable work.

Calculation and Scope of Remuneration

  • The monthly remuneration is calculated by one-twelfth of his/her yearly income. The yearly income includes a base salary and a bonus.
  • Various allowances such as commuting, dependency, housing, and overtime payment are excluded from the calculation.

"Must Receive No Less Remuneration"

  • There is a permissible standard for the "Entertainer" status. It specifies that an organization bears the obligation of paying remuneration of at least 200,000 yen per month to an applicant. Therefore, the remuneration of at least 200,000 yen is a tentative indication for acquiring above mentioned statuses of worker.
  • If a company hires new foreign graduates, the foreigners must be compensated by an amount equivalent to or greater than that paid to Japanese new graduates.
  • If a company hires experienced foreigners by mid-career recruitment, the foreigners must be compensated by an amount equivalent to or greater than that paid to Japanese workers of the same positions within a company.
  • If a company hires foreign workers for the first time, the remuneration for the foreigners is decided by referring such as educational background, company size, and professional occupation.
