Designated Activities
(for graduates of Japanese university & college)

The graduates of a Japanese university and collegewith master's/bachelor's degree and N1 certificate are eligible to obtain the status of residence of "Designated Activities" if they find a job which requires smooth communication using the Japanese language.
* The graduates of a junior college/vocational school are excluded from this regulation.

Outline of New Regulation

  • Status of Residence: Designated Activities
  • Period of Stay: Maximum of 5 years (Renewable)
  • Requirements: 
  1. The graduates of a Japanese university or college with master's or bachelor's degree,
  2. Acquisition of Level N1 of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test or a score of 480 or more in the Business Japanese Language Proficiency (BJT) Test including foreigners who graduated from a Japanese university/college having majored in Japanese language, and
  3. Full-time employees* who receive no less remuneration than would a Japanese national for comparable work.
    * Part-time employees and dispatched employees are excluded from this regulation.
  • Dependents (spouse/children): Designated Activities
  • Change of Employer: Possible (Foreigners need to apply for the change of status of residence in order to change the name of employer on a certificate of designation.)
