Foreign Professionals - Working at SMEs
If the applicant is working at the "small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs)", he/she may obtain the special additions for the point calculation of the highly skilled professionals.
Definition of SMEs
Type of Business/Capital Size/Workforce
- Manufacturing Industry, etc.
Capital Size - 300 million yen or less, OR
Regular Workforce - 300 persons or less - Wholesale Trade Industry
Capital Size - 100 million yen or less, OR
Regular Workforce - 100 persons or less - Retail Trade Industry
Capital Size - 50 million yen or less, OR
Regular Workforce - 50 persons or less - Service Industry
Capital Size - 50 million yen or less, OR
Regular Workforce - 100 persons or less
(*Definition of SMEs prescribed in Article 2 of the SME Basic Act)
（Note）
- Directors of an enterprise or owners of a sole proprietorship are not counted as the "Regular Workforce".
- If the part-time workers and expatriate workers are the object of the Article 20 of Labor Standards Act, they are counted as the "Regular Workforce".
(Article 20 of the Labor Act: "In the event that an employer wishes to dismiss a worker, the employer shall provide at least 30 days advance notice. An employer who does not give 30 days advance notice shall pay the average wages for a period of not less than 30 days.") - The restaurant business is categorized in the "Retail Trade Industry".
Special Addition I（5 Points）
If the applicant's entity is a SME and its total experiment and research/development costs exceed 3% of its total sales, he/she obtains 5 additional points.
- Research costs, etc./Total sales ≧ 3%
- The percentage is calculated by the financial statements of the business year preceding the year containing the application date.
Special Addition II（20 Points）
If the applicant's entity is a SME, and the entity is supported by innovation promotion measures related to innovation, he/she obtains 20 additional points.
