Foreign Students - Internship

When foreign students studying in Japan are participating in an internship with remuneration, they should consider applying for the "permission to engage in an activity other than that permitted by the status of residence previously granted" regardless of whether they are able to acquire credits from their educational institution by taking part in the internship.

  • If a company is to provide remuneration to foreign students, their visa status differs depending on their working hours at the company.
  • If foreign students are currently holding the "Comprehensive Permission", and their working hours of an internship are expected to exceed 28 hours per week or 8 hours a day during holiday seasons, they need to separately apply for the "Non-comprehensive Permission"※ in advance.
  • The regional immigration bureau examines the application by considering a labor contract, training program and working period/hours of the internship.
  • Therefore, a company needs to determine the working conditions of foreign students to the extent that there is no impediment to their original activities in order to obtain permission. 

※ Requirement:
・University Students (undergraduate): Senior with 90% of credits earned for graduation 
・Post-Graduate Students: Final year of post-graduate study
・Holders of the 'Designated Activities' (Job Hunting Type & Unofficial Offer for Employment Type) 
・Others: Judged on a case-by-case basis
