Professor Visa (Detailed Description)

【Equivalent Educational Institution】

• National Fisheries University, Marine Technical College (excluding branch school), National Institute for Sea Training, Civil Aviation College, Japan Coast Guard Academy, Japan Coast Guard School, Meteorological College, National Defense Academy, National Defense Medical College, Polytechnic University, Aeronautical Safety College, National College of Nursing, Japan, etc.
• National Institute of Japanese Literature, National Institute of Polar Research, National Institute of Genetics, The Institute of Statistical Mathematics, International Research Center for Japanese Studies, National Astronomical Observatory of Japan, National Institute for Fusion Science, National Institute of Informatics, Research Institute for Humanity and Nature, Institute for Molecular Science, National Institute for Basic Biology, National Institute for Physiological Sciences, Institute of Particle and Nuclear Studies, Institute of Materials Structure Science, National Museum of Ethnology, National Museum of Japanese History, National Institute for Japanese Language and Linguistics

※ National Police Academy, Social Insurance Training Institute, SME University, and Prefectural Agricultural College are not considered to be an equivalent educational institution. Therefore, if foreigners engage in activities at these institutions, the status of residence of "Engineer" or "Specialist in Humanities/International Services" may be granted instead of the "Professor" visa.

【Foreigner's Position at Institution】

• Dean, Head, Principal, President, Vice President, Vice Principal, Professor, Associate Professor, Lecturer, Junior Assistant (Note 1)

(Note 1) The above are examples of foreigner's position at an educational institution. The Regional Immigration Bureau substantially judges whether an applicant fits under permissible standards of the "Professor" visa by examining his/her duties in an educational institution.

【Full Time or Part Time】

• An applicant who engages in his/her activities on a part-time basis, he/she needs to show that he/she is able to earn a sufficient income to make a stable living in Japan. An applicant can obtain remuneration from other activities after acquiring the "Permission to Engage in an Activity Other Than That Permitted by the Status of Residence Previously Granted". 
• If the remuneration received from other activities is higher than the remuneration earned from activities permitted to perform under the "Professor" visa, the status of residence of "Engineer" or "Specialist in Humanities/International Services" may be granted instead of the "Professor" visa. 

【Remuneration】

• A salary received from an overseas organization is also considered to be remuneration.
